Hope artist statement

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Created during a hideously dark time in my life, ‘Hope’, is a response to the bad stuff that happens. It is a strong and defiant assertion that hope remains, whatever this life throws at us. I have used strong, bright colours to represent hope, in a sea of glowering, competing darks. The yellows and oranges hold their own despite the pressure of the darkness.

In my work I explore the beauty of number, sequence and proportion. The design of 'Hope' is built on a ‘reduced’ sequence of Fibonacci numbers.

Orient Express artist statement

When on holiday, whether in England or abroad, I love to seek out old churches. Tiled floors, painted ceilings, perfectly repeating archways, window tracery, gargoyles and gravestones, they all hold a fascination for me. But, above all these, stained glass! Some years ago, we were in the German Rhineland. My piece is inspired by the beautiful glass I encountered there. Working on this project gave me the excuse to revisit some of my photographs and rekindle my memories. I hope the Orient Express will take me back there one day.
