Memories of Summer artist statement
Children’s laughter in the garden. Flowers nodding under the cherry tree. Picnics in its shade. Paddling pools and hose-pipes. Sharp, cold water and baking hot sun. Completed in the depths of winter (actual physical winter and the metaphorical winter of pandemic lockdowns), this piece provokes memories in me - memories that connect me to people and experiences of the past.
Appearing random, chaotic even (a bit like an afternoon in a garden with children and hose-pipes!) this piece is actually very tightly composed according to Fibonacci’s sequence of numbers. The fabric is manipulated in a strictly logical way to create the building blocks.
This work takes me back - back to distant summers spent in our garden. Lazy, happy days.
Revelation artist statement
In the biblical account, a young, unmarried Hebrew girl is visited by an angel and asked if she is willing to give birth to the son of God.
We cannot imagine the feelings evoked by that literally incredible, yet respectful visitation. Trepidation? Awe? Uncertainty? Disbelief? Hope? Optimism? Fear? Whatever Mary’s feelings, it was an awe-inspiring, yet gentle, warm and affirming encounter.
Joy to the world artist statement
Look at me and sense my joy. My hope. My exuberance. I see a celestial host. And a town on a hill. The heavenly orchestra responds to a baton and the joy spills over and touches the earth. Made during 2020-21, this piece was created to raise my spirits - to encourage me, and others, to lift our eyes and see beyond what was pressing around us and to regain hope and joy.
Appearing random, chaotic even, this piece actually has a mathematical foundation and a strictly logical construction.
