Reflections artist statement
Created during a period of transition - the change of home from one county to another - this piece is a meditation on that move.
As I work I reflect.
Since my move, life has become full of bridges, not just physical ones, but those I now need to establish in order to maintain existing friendships at a distance. And I need to make new bridges as I seek new relationships, new friendships, new companions for the journey. My reflections are my friend as I find my way forward.
With the relocation, there is joy, loss, transition… There is height and depth of emotion. Interestingly, my piece seems to make vertical bridges whereas we think of bridges as structures which create horizontal links. I wonder what was going on there!
So many blessings artist statement
I wanted to create a dynamic piece - a lively composition with a fresh colour scheme. Some hand-dyed fabrics have been incorporated.
At first I didn’t like the way this piece was coming along and I told her so. I was finding it a struggle. But she would not let go of me! The relationship changed as she gradually wheedled her way into my affections. She was reprieved and now she’s finished - and is one of my favourite pieces. I’m glad I continued with it - I think she looks back at me now and laughs at my lack of faith in her. She definitely has a sense of humour!
As the composition was forming, I was struck by the way some of the shapes and colours came together in an obvious point. At first I referred to this piece as ‘Touching place’, but she had other ideas and wanted a different name. Some of my pieces are bossy that way! Out of the struggle came the blessing - her choice of name is appropriate!
Let the rainforest sing artist statement
What does the rainforest sound like? I am trying to imagine the colour of that song.
Employing a technique that I have used in many of my pieces, I set out to create something suggestive of heat, vitality, abundance, innocence, diversity… I imagine an instruction to bare earth to colour-up, to flourish, to flower, to reproduce abundantly, to sing…
The first iteration of this piece was purchased by the International Quilt Museum in Nebraska, USA, for their Contemporary Textiles collection.
